Portsmouth University currently run clinical CPET at both Southampton Hospital (adult and paediatric departments) and at the Department of Sport and Exercise Science at Portsmouth University.
Some of the initial research under this programme was funded by the Cystic Fibrosis Trust and the British Lung Foundation.
CFK purchased a cycle ergometer to get the ball rolling. This work is comparing the accuracy of routinely used maximal cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) protocols for paediatric and adult patients with CF. It will help to further develop the recent guidelines regarding the use of CPET within the clinical management of this patient group in European hospitals. The best ways to assess fitness of both children and adults with CF are currently being examined in addition to looking at ways to assess other components of fitness.
